Travel to Italy > Venice Venice is one of the world's most beautiful cities. Famed for its canals, it rests on an archipelago of 117 islands in North-East Italy and has remained largely unchanged for over six hundred years. Venice has a great deal to offer tourists. Buildings are several hundred years old and many of them date from the founding of the city in the 16th century. Venice's architecture is unique and several world-famous churches house small but historically important art collections. The only pedestrian-only city in the world, it remains unaffected by smog; instead, Venice's traffic problems are caused by Acqua Alta (literally "high water"), when the lagoon rises and many of Venice`s lowest streets become flooded for an hour or two at a time. A key city during the Renaissance, Venice naturally has several excellent museums and galleries. The Correr Museum on San Marco Square has a collection of globes spanning almost five hundred years. The Doge`s Palace, also on San Marco Square, was the seat of Venice`s government for centuries and contains the jail cell which once housed Casanova himself. The Galleria dell` Accademia di Venezia is on the south bank of the Grand Canal and is one of the finest art galleries in Italy; here you will find DaVinci`s Vitruvian Man sketch, amongst other equally famous works. On the island of Murano is the Glass Museum, home to thousands of fine examples of the very best Venetian or Murano Glasswork. Spring and autumn are the best seasons in which to visit. Venice also makes a good base from which to explore the region, with a train station at the entrance to the city, as well as Europe's largest car park. Consider renting a car to get the best out of North-East Italy; car hire Venice have excellent deals available year-round. |
